When the dry season warms up, the pool starts earning its keep — and the pavers, coping and tiles around it cop just as much as the water does. Up here they go green and greasy underfoot faster than almost anywhere, and around a pool that's not just an eyesore, it's a slip waiting to happen. Here's what a proper clean does for your pool surrounds across the Cassowary Coast, and why the method matters as much as the pressure.
Why pool pavers go slippery in the tropics
It's the same warm, wet, humid mix that greens up everything else in Far North Queensland — only around a pool it's worse. The pavers are constantly damp from splash-out, half of them sit in shade for part of the day, and sunscreen, body oils and leaf litter feed the mould. What you end up with is a thin, slippery biofilm you can't always see but definitely feel through bare feet. Add a wet day and it's genuinely dangerous, especially with kids running around.

Pool surrounds are a mixed bag of materials, and they don't all want the same treatment. Concrete and exposed-aggregate pavers handle a proper pressure clean well. But softer stone like travertine and sandstone, and the jointing sand between pavers, can be pitted or blown out by too much pressure held too close. Tiles and coping are usually better off with a soft wash that lifts the algae and biofilm chemically rather than blasting it. Getting the method right is the difference between a clean that lasts and a surface you've quietly damaged.
Working safely around the pool
There's a knack to cleaning right up to the water without turning your pool into a green soup. The right approach keeps the treatment off the water and out of the pool, and rinses away from the edge so your filter isn't dealing with run-off for a week. It's one of those jobs that looks simple until you're hosing dirty water straight into the pool — worth having the gear and the method sorted.
Do it while the gear's already there
