Thinking about getting your car ceramic coated but not sure it's worth the money up here? Fair question. Far North Queensland is about the harshest place in the country for paintwork, so a coating either earns its keep or it doesn't. Here's the straight version.
What ceramic coating actually is
It's a liquid polymer that bonds to your car's clear coat and cures into a hard, glass-like layer. Unlike a wax that sits on top and washes off in a few weeks, a proper ceramic coating chemically bonds to the paint and stays put for years. It doesn't change how your paint looks day-to-day — it protects it and makes it a lot easier to keep clean.
Why the tropics are brutal on paint
Between Cairns and Tully your car cops it from every angle:
- UV. Our sun fades and oxidises paint faster than down south. Reds and blacks suffer the most.
- Salt air. Anywhere near the coast, salt settles on the paint and slowly eats at it.
- Rain and humidity. Wet season brings mould, water spotting and mineral marks baked on by the sun.
- Tree sap, pollen and bird droppings. Left on hot paint, these etch in within hours.
What a coating does for you here
- Blocks UV so your paint holds its colour and gloss for longer.
- Repels water — rain beads and rolls off, taking dirt with it and cutting down water spots.
- Stops contaminants etching in — sap and droppings sit on the coating, not your paint, so they wipe straight off.
- Makes washing quicker — less scrubbing, less chance of swirl marks, more gloss.
How long does it last?
Depends on the product and how many layers, but a quality coating will run anywhere from two to five years in our climate — a world apart from wax, which you'd be re-doing every month or two up here. It's not "set and forget" (you still wash the car), but it does a lot of the heavy lifting for you.
So is it worth it?
If you're keeping the car a few years, park outside, or just hate watching good paint go dull in the tropical sun — yes. A coating costs more up front than a wax, but it lasts years instead of weeks and keeps the car looking newer for longer, which matters at resale too. If you flip cars every year and garage them, a good wax might do you fine.
