If you're looking into getting your car's paint sorted, you'll hear two terms thrown around — cut and polish, and ceramic coating. They're not the same thing, and they're not an either/or. Here's what each one actually does, and how to know which your car needs.
What a cut and polish does
A cut and polish is corrective. It uses a machine polisher to remove a microscopically thin layer of clear coat, taking swirl marks, light scratches, oxidation and dullness with it. That's what brings back the deep gloss on a car that's gone flat in the sun. It fixes the paint you've already got — but on its own it doesn't protect it from going dull again.
What a ceramic coating does
A ceramic coating is protective. It's a liquid polymer that bonds to the clear coat and cures into a hard, glass-like layer that blocks UV, repels water and stops contaminants etching in. The key difference
One fixes, the other protects. A cut and polish makes the paint look its best; a ceramic coating keeps it that way. That's exactly why the two are so often done together.
Which does your car need?
- Paint looks swirled, dull or scratched: start with a cut and polish to correct it.
- Paint's in good nick and you want to keep it that way: a ceramic coating is the move.
- You want the full result: cut and polish first to perfect the paint, then coat it to lock it in. Coating over swirls just seals the swirls in, so correction always comes first.
Why it matters up here
Far North Queensland's sun, salt and humidity are brutal on paint. Correcting and then protecting isn't vanity up here — it's what keeps your car's paint, and its resale value, from cooking in the tropical sun.
First step either way: decontaminate the paint
Whichever way you go, properly clean paint comes first. Bonded grit, salt and cane-mill fallout have to come off before you polish or coat, or you just drag them across the paint or seal them underneath. That's why we clay-bar and decontaminate before any paint work.
