Selling Your Car? Why a Pre-Sale Detail Pays for Itself

Getting ready to sell your car up here? Before you photograph it and stick it on Marketplace or Carsales, it's worth knowing that a proper pre-sale detail is one of the few things that reliably puts more money in your pocket than it costs. Buyers make up their minds fast, and a clean, cared-for car sells quicker and for more. Here's why it works and what it sorts out.

Why a pre-sale detail pays for itself

A buyer decides how they feel about a car in the first few seconds — before they've driven it, before they've looked at the logbook. A tired, grubby car makes them wonder what else has been neglected, and it hands them an excuse to knock the price down. A car that looks sharp does the opposite: it looks looked-after, it photographs well, and it gives you room to hold your asking price. Spend a bit on presentation and you very often get it back several times over at the sale.

What buyers notice first

  • Swirled, dull or oxidised paint — a dead giveaway of a car that's lived outside in the sun
  • Foggy, yellowed headlights that make the whole front end look old
  • A grimy, smelly interior — nothing kills a sale faster than a musty cabin
  • Dirty wheels, dusty vents and glary, smeared glass

What a pre-sale detail sorts out

The idea is to present the car at its honest best, inside and out:

  • A proper hand wash and decontamination, wheels and tyres cleaned and dressed
  • A cut and polish to bring back gloss and knock out swirls and oxidation
  • Headlight restoration so the front end looks years newer
  • Full interior clean — vacuum, seats and carpets, dash and vents, glass, and that tropical musty smell dealt with

The paint is where the money is

Nothing lifts a car's presentation like sorted paint. A cut and polish brings back the shine our Far North Queensland sun has flattened, and restoring foggy headlights is one of the cheapest jobs for the difference it makes. Together they make an older car look genuinely well kept in the photos and in the flesh.

Don't forget the photos

Most buyers meet your car online first, so the detail is really about the photos as much as the day of the inspection. Shoot it clean, in good light, straight after the detail — before the dust and the next rain get to it. Clean paint and glass photograph far better and pull far more clicks than a dusty car in a driveway.

When to book it

Book the detail just before you plan to photograph and list, so the car is at its best when buyers are looking. If you can, book it in early in the week and list on the weekend when the most people are browsing.
