You've probably seen it on plenty of cars around Innisfail and up the coast — headlights gone cloudy, yellow and hazy, like someone rubbed sandpaper over them. It's not just an eyesore. Foggy headlights throw a lot less light on the road at night, and up here they turn cloudy faster than almost anywhere in the country. The good news: in most cases you don't need new headlights — a proper restoration brings them back for a fraction of the price.
Why headlights go yellow up here
Modern headlights are made of polycarbonate plastic with a thin protective clear coat on the outside. Our Far North Queensland sun is brutal on that coating. Once the UV breaks it down, the plastic underneath starts to oxidise — that's the yellow, milky haze you see. Add salt air near the coast, road grime and years of heat, and headlights that should still be clear end up looking a decade older than the car.
Why it's worth fixing
- Safety. Cloudy lenses scatter your headlight beam instead of aiming it down the road. On a dark stretch of the Bruce Highway, that's a real difference in how far ahead you can see.
- Roadworthy. Badly hazed or crazed headlights can fail a roadworthy inspection — worth sorting before you go to sell.
- Looks and resale. Clear headlights make the whole front of the car look years newer. It's one of the cheapest things you can do to lift how a car presents.
- Cost. Replacement headlight units can run into the hundreds each. A restoration is a small fraction of that.
Why the servo kit doesn't last
You can buy a headlight restoration kit and get a result for a few weeks. The problem is most DIY jobs sand back the haze but never replace the protective coating — so the bare plastic is left exposed to the same UV that wrecked it in the first place, and it yellows again fast in our sun. Toothpaste and cutting compound are the same story: a quick improvement that doesn't stick.
How we restore headlights properly
- Mask off the surrounding paint and trim so nothing gets marked
- Wet-sand the lens through progressive grades to cut back the oxidised, yellowed layer
- Machine polish the lens back to clear
- Seal it with a proper UV-resistant protective coating — the step that makes it last, not just look good for a fortnight
Done this way, the clarity comes back and the coating holds up against the tropical sun far longer than any off-the-shelf kit — typically a good couple of years up here before it's worth a quick refresh, rather than a few weeks. If your car's due a rego check, it's worth getting the lights clear before the inspection rather than after a fail.
